Vitra Eames Chair
The iconic Eames RAR armchair is now made from a moulded, recyclable polypropylene shell that is designed for every body shape. The shell is placed on a four-legged braced wire base with two wooden rockers, finished with clear varnish. The result is timeless style with a relaxing, smooth movement. Every colour in our selection complements each other, so you can mix and match to suit your decor. The polypropylene shell is dyed through, so the colour will never fade. Highly influential and endlessly imitated, husband and wife team Charles and Ray Eames revolutionised 20th Century furniture design.
They combined their respective disciplines in architecture and modern art with low-cost yet durable materials to create perfectly balanced, functional furniture. The Eames works have proved to be real designs for life: they are iconic art pieces and objects of desire, yet utterly practical. Originally made in fibreglass for the 1950 MOMA Low Cost Furniture design competition, the DSR was the first industrially-produced plastic chair.
NOW SOLD Vintage TEAK LOUNGE CHAIR Danish MODERN Style RETRO Eames R HUBER
NOW SOLD For sale here is a fantastic Vintage Teak Lounge / Arm Chair, made by the R.Huber company in Canada. From what I have discovered after speaking to some collectors of Canadian Mid-Century pieces and some online research R.Huber imported Danish Made pieces as well as manufacturing their own quality Danish style teak pieces as well. I do not know the exact year it was made, but I believe it to have been in the late 1960 (as there is a label with a 1968 date on it) I also believe that the upholstery is original to the piece.
The upholstery is in nice vintage condition. No stains, tears or holes. The inner foam of the seat cushion is still soft and spongy, the foam of back cushion is spongy, but has started to harden at the edges a bit. You can replace the inner foam yourself fairly easily as both removable cushions have zippers and the inner foam can be removed (I have taken this into account in the pricing) The solid teak legs, and horse shoe shaped wrap around teak accent at the top are in fantastic shape, having taken on a glowing patina that can only be found with well cared for vintage pieces such as this one.
The flowing rounded organic lines and low sleek profile make this an eye catching piece. The Chair measures as follows, 34 inches at its widest point, 36 inches back to front. The seat cushion is 16 inches tall at the knee and the back cushion is 30 inches tall.
Eames Lounge Chair
Best All-Around Reading Chair: Depending on whom you ask, the Eames lounge and its ottoman are played out. Over. So ubiquitous in neo-modernist hipster homes that it is barely worthy of comment. To those people, we politely say: shut up. The Eames lounger is a classic, plain and simple. It is been in continuous production since it was introduced in 1956 — and still there might not be a better looking, more comfortable chair on the market. If there is such thing as a benchmark in reading chairs, this right here is it. BUY NOW: $4,859+
Room and Board Callan Chair & Ottoman
Best Chameleon Reading Chair: The Callan chair is a masterclass in both comfort and design, with a light touch of the unassuming. Its seat cushion, made of eco-friendly, highly resilient foam that is topped with an extra layer of padding, is made for blissful comfort yet melds perfectly with the chairs kiln-dried hardwood frame. The chair is available in several different fabric colors and wooden finishes, so customizing it to match any room is not a problem. A matching ottoman can be purchased for those who like their feet elevated when devouring Hemingway.
Before you fall completely head over heels in love
with this furniture piece (maybe I should have cautioned earlier),
I should warn you that it is pricey! In 1956,
it retailed at a bit over 300 dollars. Now, a newly constructed
Eames Lounge will run you about $4500 before tax in the United States, with some classics selling in auction for close to the $7000 mark! Even high quality and convincing replicas approach two grand.
The European Vitra version is even more expensive. But hey, we can dream right?
If you are ever blessed enough to purchase one
of these beauties, however, the attention to detail
and high quality, hand crafted construction will
last decades making it an heirloom to be
passed on from generation to generation.
This chair made its TV debut in 1956 on NBCs broadcast of Arlene Francis Home. You can watch the videos of this vintage appearance on Youtube. Part one here and part two here for those interested.
This chair is often quoted for its prominent
appearance in the hit show Frasier
(reportedly seen in all episodes but one!)
. I am not the hugest Frasier fan, however, so my favourite
guest appearance of the chair is on Gossip Girl,
where it was recovered in a gorgeous Missoni fabric.
